Unbox and Verify Your Device

When you receive your Ledger device, carefully unbox it and ensure all components are present. Your package should include:

  • Ledger hardware wallet
  • USB cable
  • Recovery sheet
  • Keychain strap
  • Getting started guide

Check that the anti-tampering seal is intact. If the seal is broken, do not use the device and contact Ledger support immediately.

Security Warning

Only purchase Ledger devices from the official Ledger website or authorized resellers. Third-party marketplaces may sell tampered devices.

Install Ledger Live

Ledger Live is the official companion application for your Ledger device. It allows you to manage your crypto assets, check your portfolio, and install apps.

  1. Visit the official Ledger website at ledger.com/live
  2. Download Ledger Live for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux)
  3. Install the application following the on-screen instructions
  4. Launch Ledger Live once installation is complete

Always verify that you're downloading Ledger Live from the official Ledger website to avoid phishing attempts.

Initialize Your Device

Now it's time to set up your Ledger device:

  1. Connect your Ledger device to your computer using the provided USB cable
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions on your device to choose a PIN code
  3. Your device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase - write it down on the provided recovery sheet
  4. Confirm your recovery phrase by selecting the words in the correct order
Critical Security Step

Your recovery phrase is the ONLY way to recover your funds if your device is lost, stolen, or damaged. Never share it with anyone, never store it digitally, and keep it in a safe place.

Install Apps and Add Accounts

With your device set up, you can now install apps for different cryptocurrencies:

  1. In Ledger Live, go to the "Manager" tab
  2. Connect and unlock your Ledger device
  3. Allow the manager on your device when prompted
  4. Browse or search for the crypto app you want to install
  5. Click "Install" next to the app name
  6. Repeat for each cryptocurrency you want to manage

After installing apps, you can create accounts for each cryptocurrency:

  1. Go to the "Accounts" tab in Ledger Live
  2. Click "Add account"
  3. Select the cryptocurrency
  4. Follow the verification process on your device
  5. Your new account will appear in your portfolio

Receive and Send Cryptocurrency

To receive crypto assets:

  1. Select the account you want to receive to
  2. Click "Receive"
  3. Verify the address on your Ledger device screen
  4. If correct, confirm on your device
  5. Use the provided address to receive funds

To send crypto assets:

  1. Select the account you want to send from
  2. Click "Send"
  3. Enter the recipient address and amount
  4. Verify all transaction details on your Ledger device screen
  5. If correct, confirm the transaction on your device
Transaction Security

Always verify the recipient address and amount on your device screen before confirming any transaction. Malware can alter addresses on your computer screen.

Maintain Your Device

Keep your Ledger device and software up to date for optimal security:

  • Regularly check for firmware updates in Ledger Live
  • Keep Ledger Live updated to the latest version
  • Update your device's firmware when notifications appear
  • Never interrupt an update process
  • Ensure your recovery phrase is stored securely
